jay maisel / interview

jay maisel

jay maisel is an amazing photographer. in fact he’s one of the best.  his photographs are vibrant and alive. he is a living legend. over the last few years i’ve had a handful of opportunities to hang out with jay and i’ve consistently been impressed and inspired. a few weeks back when we crossed paths i asked jay a handful of questions and recorded his response. as always, jay’s words were honest, insightful, entertaining and thought-provoking.

What is the photo that inspired Maisel? I cannot understand him. Sounded like Newman’s photo of someone at a piano. Thanks if you can clarify!

One of the things that Mr. Maisel said during the interview struck me as true and right on point. It concerned the point he made about going to photography school, I had gone to photography school however I believe my work is off to a good start. That is not to say anything negative about photography school, but those of us that went in another direction may bring to the table some interesting perspectives.

Jay was asked: How do you become a better Photographer? His reply: Become a more interesting person.

The Luminous Landscape has an intervew (for sale) with Jay. I have watched it at least 10 times and I will watch it 10 times more. Jay seems to have a deep understanding of what photography is about and can articulate it in ways which I understand.

I’ve already listened to this interview 3 times.

My thanks to you and to Jay.
