Chris, thanks for your piece at the end of The Inspired Eye 2. Your list of ways to inhibit creativity was bang on. I’ve been susceptible to buying expensive gear as well as spending too much time looking at the work of others. The problem with expensive equipment is that after you buy it, you feel pressure to produce “great” pictures in keeping with the amount of money you spent. As for spending too much time looking at other’s work, it can make you overly critical of your own work and before you know it, nothing you produce is good enough. On a recent family vacation to Disney World I took a Nikon D40 with a kit 18-35 lens. I had no expectations and was completely relaxed and surprise, surprise, I came away with many great shots!
art – thanks for the good words and wonderful words about the family vacation pics. i especially like the idea of being completely relaxed. there’s something to relaxed attentiveness that leads to good results. and your words about gear really resonated with me. thanks!
Art Yochim has nailed it precisely!, Especially the gear thing and the expectations (to ourselves) to deliver better images.
I bought both books i & ii, David continues to story tell and reveal with his words & with his frames. I like how we get the whole frame, raw.
The two most important words….’what if…’
I couldn’t buy this ebook fast enough – it’s a great read and part of the money from the first 1,000 or so copies went to fund part of school in Africa. I especially enjoyed your words about how it takes being more than a photographer to be a good photographer. I think it’s important that we be well-rounded people which will show in our photography.
Great! I’ll have to check this one out. I’m really enjoying Visual Poetry and am wondering what to read next for my photographic journey. BTW, I’m so happy you’ve included the reading and assignments you did in VP; I am really learning to be a “people person” and am putting myself out there (approaching strangers to do their portraits, etc.). Again, thank you!
