I especially enjoyed your words about how it takes being more than a photographer to be a good photographer. I think it's important that we be well-rounded people which will show in our photography. Your list of ways to inhibit creativity was bang on. I've been susceptible to buying expensive gear as well as spending too much time looking at the work of others. The problem with expensive equipment is that after you buy it, you feel pressure to produce "great" pictures in keeping with the amount of money you spent. As for spending too much time looking at other's work, it can make you overly critical of your own work and before you know it, nothing you produce is good enough. On a recent family vacation to Disney World I took a Nikon D40 with a kit 18-35 lens. I had no expectations and was completely relaxed and surprise, surprise, I came away with many great shots!
