standing with sticks

went camping along the beach this last weekend with some good friends. i love being on the coast during the spring – walking through wildflowers, feeling the brisk breeze and basking in the warming sun. i like the photograph above and how simple and timeless it feels. the wind in their hair. the two girls looking away while the other two look ahead. childhood moves so fast and here they are for just one moment, standing with sticks.

ralph clevenger

i captured the image above at ralph’s home in santa barbara.
if you’re not familiar with ralph, he is an inspiring person and amazing photographer.

martyn and dylan

martyn and dylan

martyn is like a brother to me. his son dylan has keen eyes, a sharp mind and a sensitive soul.  they truly are father and son. guancaste, costa rica.

family at sunset

family

above is a photograph from last weekend of some family friends at the coast. it was made with a large format wood and brass camera and expired/discontinued film. in a time when perfect pixels have such high value, i find myself even more drawn to the subtleties and imperfections of certain types of traditional photographic techniques. and for me its not a question of “either or” or “new versus old”… rather i take a “both and” approach and enjoy many different types of photography. to view the other photos click here – enjoy.

channel islands

channel islands
